Matteo Poletti’s new book is out today with Sperling & Kupfer

Matteo Poletti’s new book Splendida giornata per un funerale” (A Wonderful Day for a Funeral) is out today with the Italian publishing house Sperling & Kupfer.

A Wonderful Day for a Funeral

Matteo Poletti

Nemo is thirty years old and, to support himself, he works in his family’s funeral home as the one responsible for stretchers. As a matter of fact, he does his job so unenthusiastically and inattentively that more often than not he just causes problems, for the desperation of those uncles and cousins who work with him. He used to be a photography lover, but he abandoned his passion after putting some of his pictures on display – even though the public reacted reasonably well to the exhibit. That’s when he became unsociable, emotionless and indifferent and that’s when his uncontrollable and apprehensive family started to worry about him. One day, his job takes him to Novalesa, a small town located somewhere nearby Turin, to take care of the funeral of Aurora Vannelli Conticini, an old lady that he actually knew. Nemo, who lived in Novalesa for a while to attend a private highschool, is forced to think about his adolescence and to see his former teachers and
classmates again. Among them, there used to be Carlo, his best friend during those years, who disappeared when he was 17. Nobody has seen him since then. During Aurora’s funeral, Nemo gets to speak with her sister, Malvina, a slightly mad woman with a passion for spiritualism who, moved by guilt, is always talking about the past. Malvina thinks that her sister didn’t die a natural death, and foresees the same fate for herself. Her prophecy turns into reality when, a week later, she dies after a suspect fall caused by ice. Nemo, who saw a picture of Carlo in Aurora and Malvina’s house (picture that mysteriously disappeared shortly after), is convinced that Carlo’s disappearance ten years before and these two deaths are linked. It is to find out what happened to Carlo that he abandons his apathy and goes back to Novalesa. While looking for him, Nemo gets to evaluate and rethink about his past, his choices, his fears, his abandoned passions and his tired way of existing instead of actually living. Everything is still the same in that narrow-minded, suffocating place – full of prejudices, rules and rigidity – where conformists think of themselves as rulers, today just like ten years ago, although in fact their being moralists is just an act. However, Nemo’s investigation succeeds in upsetting that small community: regrets and remorse are unearthed and everyone is forced to deal with their past, their undisclosed desires and their lost opportunities. But, above all, the investigation allows Nemo to find his true self, to abandon the sloth he has been friend with for so long and to make peace with his creative muse.

The Italian version of A Year in the Forest is out today with Fabbri Editore

Emilia Dziubak’s “A Year in the Forest”, originally published by Nasza Ksiegarnia, is out today with Fabbri Editori for the Italian market, with the title of “Un anno nella foresta“.

Wild boar, wolves, pheasants, a bear cub, ants, a woodpecker, foxes, a badger, grass snakes, frogs, an elk and many other creatures live in the forest. How do they play and rest? Who sleeps in the day, and who sleeps at night? Who likes whom? What are their favourite treats? Look for answers across the pages of this remarkable book.

A Year in the Forest contains fourteen double-page spreads, twelve of which correspond to each month of the year. Each month shows the same snapshot of the forest and features the same cast of characters in a variety of weather conditions, at different times of the day and night, and in various situations. Two additional spreads contain an introduction to all the characters and an interactive game.

It’s perfectly possible to browse through A Year in the Forest for hours on end. This remarkable book stimulates the imagination and develops skills of perception and logical thinking. It also builds storytelling skills and the ability to identify cause and effect. Above all, it guarantees great fun.

INDIAN SUMMER

A snowstorm is about to hit a remote lake in North America. An Italian-Canadian young man is waiting for it, standing completely still by the window of his cottage. Peter Orlandi, that’s his name, came to live here in absolute solitude after his mother’s suicide. A suicide he witnessed without trying to stop her. The stillness of body and spirit seems to him like the right kind of weapon agaist the dangerous softness of the present world.
Yet nothing stays still for very long, and nobody can be alone forever.
All it takes is a brave postwoman who, in spite of the terrible snowstorm, delivers to him a telegram from Italy; all it takes is a half-sister, the obscure object of incestuous desire, who begs him to go back home; all it takes is the news that his father is terminally ill to break his stillness and make him return to his old family home. Thus Peter enters his father’s bedroom to suffocate him with a pillow, fully accepting the double role of victim and slayer. He is ready to make come true the omen that followed him during his voyage home: the sacrifice that turns a man into a handful of dust and allows the rest of his family to keep on living.

Second presentation of Casiraghi’s Estate indiana, Udine

Thursday 9th November, at 18 pm, our Mauro Casiraghi is presenting his new novel, Estate Indiana (ed. Alberto Gaffi) for the second time. The presentation is taking place in Udine, at the Tarantola bookshop, and the editor, Alessandro Lutman (a poet), Nicola Skert (a writer) and Roberto Mete are going to discuss with the author.

When he was a boy, Peter felt for his sister Celeste something that brothers are not supposed to feel. It was to escape these feelings that he moved to the solitary banks of Dawn Lake, Canada. Everything changed when his father was involved in an accident and Peter was forced to cross those boundaries that had kept him away for so long. Estate indiana is an ‘on the road’ novel set in the one place known for his still, almost unreal time: the Indian summer.

Matilde editrice publishing house’s Sguardi differenti won two prizes

The Italian publishing house Matilda (formerly known as Mammeonline and client of our agency), won two awards during the eleventh edition of the National ‘Mariateresa Di Lascia’ Prize. Their book ‘Sguardi Differenti’ (Different Looks) was awarded with the Best Essay Prize and with the Unifg Prize – on whom these words can be read: “thought for women who look for new words to talk about a future that will not forget them”.

These words seem perfect for the book ‘Sguardi Differenti’, in that it is a collection of different female voices who talk about sexism, gender and the problems linked to being parents with simple words, but, at the same time, in a very scientific and deep way.

Fascial Release for Structural Balance got published in Italy

The book Fascial Release for Structural Balance, edited by North Atlantic Books (our client) and written by James Earls and Thomas Myers, got published in Italy last July. The Italian version, called Fascial release per il riequilibrio funzionale, has been published by Edi.Ermes.

This thoroughly revised edition of the authoritative reference Fascial Release for Structural Balance brings the book up to date with all of the most current research on the role of fascia and myofascia in the body, and how treatment affects it. This edition takes advantage of more sophisticated testing to explore in greater detail the relationship between anatomical structure and function, making it an even more essential guide. Offering a detailed introduction to structural anatomy and fascial release therapy, including postural analysis, complete technique descriptions, and the art of proper assessment of a patient through “bodyreading,” the book features 150 color photographs that clearly demonstrate each technique. The authors, both respected bodywork professionals, give any bodywork practitioner using manual therapy—including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, myofascial and trigger point therapists, and massage therapists—the information they need to deliver effective treatments and create long-lasting, systemic change in clients’ shape and structure.

Fascia, the soft tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and organs, plays a crucial role in supporting the body. By learning to intelligently manipulate it, a bodyworker or therapist can help with many chronic conditions that their clients suffer from, providing immediate pain relief as well as reducing the strains that may contribute to the patient’s ongoing aches and pains, leading to rapid, effective, and lasting pain relief. James Earls and Thomas Meyers argue that approaching the fascia requires “a different eye, a different touch, and tissue-specific techniques.”

Carlo Vanin took part in ‘Gli stonati’

Carlo Vanin, an author of our agency, took part in a very interesting project for Neo Edizioni: a book in favour of the legalization of cannabis in Italy.

This book, which is a collection of short stories written by many Italian authors, is surprising and moving at the same time. All the authors involved agreed to donate the money earned with their rights for this book to an Italian NGO fighting for freedom in scientific research: Associazione Luca Coscioni.
