A novel inspired by the life of the sculptor Nado Canuti, the author’s father. Through the eyes of the young Nado, the reader experiences the contrast between the carefree nature of childhood and the harshness of reality, in a story of pain, resilience and hope.
A coming-of-age novel set during the Second World War, it tells the story of eleven-year-old Nado, who lives in the small village of Bettolle, in Tuscany. The narrative, steeped in irony and melancholy, follows the fortunes of the boy’s family and his young friends in a Germany-occupied Italy. Suddenly, Nado’s life is marked by a dramatic event: the explosion of a bomb that takes away seven of his fingers. This incident becomes a symbol of his struggle to grow up and find meaning in a world torn apart by war.
