Matteo Poletti’s new book is out today with Sperling & Kupfer

Matteo Poletti’s new book Splendida giornata per un funerale” (A Wonderful Day for a Funeral) is out today with the Italian publishing house Sperling & Kupfer.

A Wonderful Day for a Funeral

Matteo Poletti

Nemo is thirty years old and, to support himself, he works in his family’s funeral home as the one responsible for stretchers. As a matter of fact, he does his job so unenthusiastically and inattentively that more often than not he just causes problems, for the desperation of those uncles and cousins who work with him. He used to be a photography lover, but he abandoned his passion after putting some of his pictures on display – even though the public reacted reasonably well to the exhibit. That’s when he became unsociable, emotionless and indifferent and that’s when his uncontrollable and apprehensive family started to worry about him. One day, his job takes him to Novalesa, a small town located somewhere nearby Turin, to take care of the funeral of Aurora Vannelli Conticini, an old lady that he actually knew. Nemo, who lived in Novalesa for a while to attend a private highschool, is forced to think about his adolescence and to see his former teachers and
classmates again. Among them, there used to be Carlo, his best friend during those years, who disappeared when he was 17. Nobody has seen him since then. During Aurora’s funeral, Nemo gets to speak with her sister, Malvina, a slightly mad woman with a passion for spiritualism who, moved by guilt, is always talking about the past. Malvina thinks that her sister didn’t die a natural death, and foresees the same fate for herself. Her prophecy turns into reality when, a week later, she dies after a suspect fall caused by ice. Nemo, who saw a picture of Carlo in Aurora and Malvina’s house (picture that mysteriously disappeared shortly after), is convinced that Carlo’s disappearance ten years before and these two deaths are linked. It is to find out what happened to Carlo that he abandons his apathy and goes back to Novalesa. While looking for him, Nemo gets to evaluate and rethink about his past, his choices, his fears, his abandoned passions and his tired way of existing instead of actually living. Everything is still the same in that narrow-minded, suffocating place – full of prejudices, rules and rigidity – where conformists think of themselves as rulers, today just like ten years ago, although in fact their being moralists is just an act. However, Nemo’s investigation succeeds in upsetting that small community: regrets and remorse are unearthed and everyone is forced to deal with their past, their undisclosed desires and their lost opportunities. But, above all, the investigation allows Nemo to find his true self, to abandon the sloth he has been friend with for so long and to make peace with his creative muse.

Matteo Poletti was born in Susa in 1979. He graduated in History of Cinema at the DAMS course of Turin. He worked for some online magazines that are about cinema and he published an essay about Blake Edwards called “Il tocco della pantera” (2010, ed. Il Principe Costante). In 2006, he had his debut as a writer with some short, thriller stories that won a few literary contests. One of those stories, “Il cane di velluto”, got published in the series Gialli Mondadori.

In 2008, he was the winner of the literary contest “L’indizio Nascosto” with his thriller “Lo sguardo di Carola”, which got published the following year with “Terza Pagina Edizioni”.

In 2015, he won the Bukowski National Prize with his novel “Jam Session”, which got published in 2016 with “Giovane Holden Edizioni”. In 2016, one of his short stories won the contest “Parole Resistenti” held in Atessa (Chieti).
He is co-author of the blog “Restart”. He lives and works in Valsusa.

The book can be also bought on ibs.

INDIAN SUMMER

A snowstorm is about to hit a remote lake in North America. An Italian-Canadian young man is waiting for it, standing completely still by the window of his cottage. Peter Orlandi, that’s his name, came to live here in absolute solitude after his mother’s suicide. A suicide he witnessed without trying to stop her. The stillness of body and spirit seems to him like the right kind of weapon agaist the dangerous softness of the present world.
Yet nothing stays still for very long, and nobody can be alone forever.
All it takes is a brave postwoman who, in spite of the terrible snowstorm, delivers to him a telegram from Italy; all it takes is a half-sister, the obscure object of incestuous desire, who begs him to go back home; all it takes is the news that his father is terminally ill to break his stillness and make him return to his old family home. Thus Peter enters his father’s bedroom to suffocate him with a pillow, fully accepting the double role of victim and slayer. He is ready to make come true the omen that followed him during his voyage home: the sacrifice that turns a man into a handful of dust and allows the rest of his family to keep on living.

Second presentation of Casiraghi’s Estate indiana, Udine

Thursday 9th November, at 18 pm, our Mauro Casiraghi is presenting his new novel, Estate Indiana (ed. Alberto Gaffi) for the second time. The presentation is taking place in Udine, at the Tarantola bookshop, and the editor, Alessandro Lutman (a poet), Nicola Skert (a writer) and Roberto Mete are going to discuss with the author.

When he was a boy, Peter felt for his sister Celeste something that brothers are not supposed to feel. It was to escape these feelings that he moved to the solitary banks of Dawn Lake, Canada. Everything changed when his father was involved in an accident and Peter was forced to cross those boundaries that had kept him away for so long. Estate indiana is an ‘on the road’ novel set in the one place known for his still, almost unreal time: the Indian summer.

Matilde editrice publishing house’s Sguardi differenti won two prizes

The Italian publishing house Matilda (formerly known as Mammeonline and client of our agency), won two awards during the eleventh edition of the National ‘Mariateresa Di Lascia’ Prize. Their book ‘Sguardi Differenti’ (Different Looks) was awarded with the Best Essay Prize and with the Unifg Prize – on whom these words can be read: “thought for women who look for new words to talk about a future that will not forget them”.

These words seem perfect for the book ‘Sguardi Differenti’, in that it is a collection of different female voices who talk about sexism, gender and the problems linked to being parents with simple words, but, at the same time, in a very scientific and deep way.

Fascial Release for Structural Balance got published in Italy

The book Fascial Release for Structural Balance, edited by North Atlantic Books (our client) and written by James Earls and Thomas Myers, got published in Italy last July. The Italian version, called Fascial release per il riequilibrio funzionale, has been published by Edi.Ermes.

This thoroughly revised edition of the authoritative reference Fascial Release for Structural Balance brings the book up to date with all of the most current research on the role of fascia and myofascia in the body, and how treatment affects it. This edition takes advantage of more sophisticated testing to explore in greater detail the relationship between anatomical structure and function, making it an even more essential guide. Offering a detailed introduction to structural anatomy and fascial release therapy, including postural analysis, complete technique descriptions, and the art of proper assessment of a patient through “bodyreading,” the book features 150 color photographs that clearly demonstrate each technique. The authors, both respected bodywork professionals, give any bodywork practitioner using manual therapy—including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, myofascial and trigger point therapists, and massage therapists—the information they need to deliver effective treatments and create long-lasting, systemic change in clients’ shape and structure.

Fascia, the soft tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and organs, plays a crucial role in supporting the body. By learning to intelligently manipulate it, a bodyworker or therapist can help with many chronic conditions that their clients suffer from, providing immediate pain relief as well as reducing the strains that may contribute to the patient’s ongoing aches and pains, leading to rapid, effective, and lasting pain relief. James Earls and Thomas Meyers argue that approaching the fascia requires “a different eye, a different touch, and tissue-specific techniques.”

Marilena Renda’s new book came out today

One of our Italian authors, Marilena Renda, has just published a book with the Italian publishing house Mesogea.

REGALI AI FANTASMI (Presents to ghosts)

An intriguing story, told in a very poetic and resonant prose, about two orphaned sisters from Sicily. They lost their parents in a plane accident and Lena, who moved to Northern Italy as a teacher, goes back to Palermo in order to take care of her younger sister Vittoria who is deaf and lives with their aunt. Lena goes to a school to learn sign language, and Vittoria is the main character of their little world, with her antics and her unconscious grace. Palermo is an eerie city teeming with strange characters, where the two sisters used to live in an enchanted atmosphere when they were children, but now it looks more like something unreal.
In school Lena makes some friends, young unemployed people like her. When Giacomo, the teacher, decides to stage a play, he choses Vittoria as the leading actress. And it is with Vittoria that Dario, Lena’s friend and leading actor, falls in love. Again, Lena is in the backdrop.

Roy Jacobsen shortlisted to the Man Booker International Prize

We are thrilled to announce that Roy Jacobsen, who we represent in Italy on behalf of Cappelen Damm Agency, has been shortlisted to the prestigious Man Booker International Prize for his novel The Unseen – Congratulations to this wonderful author!

The Unseen will be published in Italy by Bompiani in the first months of 2018.

It is quite the achievement, being shortlisted along with authors like Dorthe Nors and Amos Oz. Roy Jacobsens down to earth and ultimately touching novel has really impressed readers in many countries – and there are more to come…

As Eileen Battersby of the Irish Times said it:

‘…as blunt as it is subtle and is easily among the best books I have ever read.(…) There is a unique universality about The Unseen. Jacobsen’s prose is beautiful, clean, poised and plain-speaking, but there are interludes of Shakespearean grandeur in the dazzling descriptions of storms. The family seems to accept these vicious tempests as necessary rituals. (…) Yes, there is a terrific story but it is the writing that will cause most readers to read this book at one sitting.‘

Fingers crossed for the win!

Sex, drugs and kicks in the teeth – Rock’n’roll scandal stories by Renzo Stefanel out now for Giunti editore

SEX & DRUGS & KICKS IN THE TEETH (Giunti editore, 2015) by Renzo Stefanel, rock critic and author. In the sixty-plus years of its history, rock music stole to blues the reputation of “devil’s music”, with an endless series of murky stories, and lives devoted to recklessness, excess and madness. This book is a selection of 40 terrifying and disturbing stories, brilliantly told by the author: Keith Moon and Iggy Pop’s crazy deeds; Hank Williams’ and Sid Vicious’ desperate death; Syd Barrett, Peter Green and Brian Wilson losing their mind; the sagas of depravation by the Led Zeppelin; AJ Weberman, the man who wanted to free Dylan from himself; and Charles Manson, who was an ambitious singer before becoming a ruthless murderer.

DE BELLO ALIENO (Delos 2014, winner of 2013 Odissea Award 800 copies sold so far, rave reviews, good chart placement). Steampunk and sci-fi novel set in 1st century Rome

Set in an ancient Rome that is very different from the one we know: the Eternal City is connected to other Italian cities by a railway network, to the other Mediterranean ports by steam ships, and the legions are armed with cannons and rifles. Basically it is the beginning of an industrial revolution like in 18th century England. All this progress has developed thanks to Caesar, who, sent into exile by Sulla, fled to Alexandria where he met the scientist Heron and became an able and astute scientist and entrepreneur himself.

These events are the setting for the story but are not narrated directly because in the year in which the story is set, 49 BC, they have already for the most part become the norm: they are mentioned in passing by the characters and above all they are written about in the excerpts, some authentic some not, from Plutarch’s “Life of Caesar” which open each chapter.

Each of the novel’s characters is a real person from ancient Roman history and even though placed in a Rome that is very different from the actual ancient Rome they behave as the historical originals would have done. The main characters are therefore Caesar, Pompey, Cato, Cicero, Brutus, Mark Antony, and Catullus who often say things recorded in the history books though in a different context.

There are two narrative threads: on the one hand we follow the intrigues of Roman society with Cato attempting to destroy Caesar’s res novae, and on the other the war that breaks out when Wellsian tripods land on the slopes of Vesuvius. The events are not narrated directly but are extrapolated from letters sent between the characters, excerpts from their diaries and their personal notes, newspaper articles, political leaflets, meeting minutes and so on. This allows us to see the events from the differing points of view of the various characters expressed in their own “language” (for example Cicero writes in a very different style to Catullus) and I feel it also gives a certain rhythm to the story despite requiring a little extra work on the part of the reader.

Primi nomi in arrivo?

anima latina: storia e cronistoria

disponibile su Amazon in versione e-book e su carta

“Un libro semplicemente clamoroso.” (Michele Neri, critico e ricercatore musicale, esperto battistiano)

Renzo Stefanel vive a Padova.

Pagg. 150
ISBN 9788896753972

pdf Download an excerpt in Italian

Omar is fourteen. He arrives in Italy from Senegal with his mother to join his father, who has been working for a long while in the Northeast and works in a Lanerossi yarn factory in  a smalltown near Vicenza. Omar is happy because he sees a new world in front of him. But the land that welcomed him also shows her tough side.
The boy will have to make difficult choices in order to assimilate and gain the respect of his peers. He will get into graffiti art, the only form of escape that can make him feel happy and free. His family will be overwhelmed by personal and work problems, and not even his puppy love for a girl who is also an immigrant, like him, will save him from the tragedy ahead.
A story that embodies several true stories, condensed into a single one, to enable the reader to get in the shoes of those who, like Omar, are displaced in a world that does not understand where the only way of salvation can sometimes only be escape.

La Notte della Mediarchia – Il Commissario Elio Gamba (Panda edizioni, 2014 ISBN 9788896753941)

pdf download an excerpt in  Italian

In an alternate present ruled by the regime of Mass-Mediarchy, the industrial area of Marghera (Venice) has exploded  exhaling in the air a putrid fog that has condemned the Italian north-east to an eternal night.
Elio Gamba is a superintendent of the New Company of Police. He is violent and incomprehensible, and  addicted, as most of the population, to the state drug: AEIOU tablets.
Carla Chinellato is a detective inspector who has just been transferred to Gamba’s police station. She does her all not to lose her sanity in a world that has lost every sense of logic. Marzia Gamba is the deceased wife of the Commissioner, but in this story not even death serves to soothe the pain.
Cristiano Gamba, aka Musashi, is Elio’son, born on the same day of the explosion of Marghera. His body has been black ever since.
Sun-Eye is blind and wants to see again.
There are things that bite in here.
