A story by our Franca Di Muzio has been selected for the anthology I giorni alla finestra from Il Saggiatore, over more than 1000 submissions
In March 2020, the mobility of Italian citizens was limited to cope with an unprecedented and very serious health emergency caused by the spread of a virus hitherto almost completely unknown. From that moment our lives became limited to the spaces of our houses and to the few hundred meters that surround them.
On April 10, we invited our readers to share very short stories of the days spent observing the world through the windows that we imagine have suddenly become a lens, mirror, threshold, glimmer, frame or transparent barrier to defend ourselves from an increasingly distant exterior. What you will read is the result of the editorial selection made on the approximately thousand texts received by our publishing house in the following days. The stories were chosen for their documentary or narrative interest, because we believe that each testimony has an invaluable value in itself. We therefore thank all those who have allowed us to be able to observe our time suspended through an unexpected amount – for us, in the beginning – of windows.
From 30 April 2020 and this eBook is published in free distribution. The measures introduced in early March were lifted only in early May.
Il Caravan (The Scamp: A Novel), by Jennifer Pashley, out now with Carbonio Editore
Rayelle Reed, 23, meets a detective on the trail of a series of missing girls. Meanwhile, another young woman, a lesbian serial killer, is walking down those same paths… Set in the desolate rural areas of the southern United States, including caravan parks, cemeteries, motels, gas stations, The caravan is the story of a girl looking for herself. A gloomy and disturbing thriller, crossed by a luminous poetic vein, in which Jennifer Pashley tells us about mothers and daughters, domestic violence, incest, social discomfort, letting out poverty and despair, but also the bare and tenacious beauty of places and people. Pashley sinks into the psyche of the protagonists and explores the subtle tangles of human relations, rereading with a bold look the relationship between the executioner and his victim.
Renato de Rosa, future Carbonio author with Osvaldo, l’Algoritmo di Dio (Osvaldo, God’s Algorithm), takes part in AIE’s initiative #ioleggoperché, and tells us about the importance of books and reading in this time of emergency for the whole country.

The last five days of Enrico Berlinguer, the attempt of a historical and personal overview. The chronicle of that moment, when Italian politics changed forever.
June 7th 1984, Piazza dei Frutti in Padua, 10.09 PM. Enrico Berlinguer is giving a very crowded speech. All of a sudden, he is sized by an illness, yet he manages to conclude his speech. Five days later, the secretary of the greatest occidental communist party dies at the civil hospital. It is the end of a dream, for millions of Italians. Among the hundreds of people witnessing the speech, and then waiting at the hospital, is Piero Ruzzante, young activist of the local Fgci. After more than thirty years, Ruzzante retraces those days step by step, from the stage arrangement with the comrades of the youth organization, to the making of the live stream; from the carrying of the secretary to the hotel right after the illness, to the first diagnosis; from the visits of politicians and statesmen – Pertini’s was deeply felt, Craxi’s rather tense – to the end of the agony, and finally to the solemn and wide funeral procession.
Thanks to an impressive collection of original reports and archival documents, Ruzzante merges the chronicle of those tragic days and Berlinguer’s crucial role in the politics of his days, in Italy and elsewhere: the great social battles, the DC-PCI agreement and the moral issue, the relations with the Soviet Union, the strong bond with the working class, the alleged and failed assassination attempts and the tension with the socialists. Next to the political side lies the personal one, showing a decent man, so grave and humble he was defined sad, loved by his comrades and respected by his opponents, crushed at last by a stoic will that always prevented him from avoiding his duties, from being indifferent to the last’s claims.
That day in Piazza dei Frutti a crucial phase of Italian politics ended, but Berlinguer’s beliefs and ethical conduct continued to be an inspiration for many. Telling his story is no mere exercise of reminiscence, but a necessary act, ensuring that wind to keep blowing.
Piero Ruzzante
municipal council member in Padua, regional council member in Veneto, was twice elected MP in the Chamber of Deputies. He now studies history and this is his first published book.
Antonio Martini

Words Without Borders published a translated excerpt of Farfariel: The Book of Micù by Pietro Albì. Foreign rights are available at our agency
Canzano, 1938: Micù is a ten-year-old boy, born in a rural family from Abruzzo and crippled by polio. Every morning he wakes up breathless after having the most extravagant nightmares. Isn’t it enough what he has to endure when he is awake?
Different from the other children, Micù tries to grow up and find his place in a harsh environment which barely cares about his condition: every day, on top of the suffering and his poor health, he has to face his classmates’ teasing, the locals’ silly superstitions and his father’s mistrust of school and of his wish to keep studying.
Micù, no matter what, doesn’t lose his heart and tries to help his beloved Tatà, his quiet grandfather with an ambiguous past as a migrant in Lamerica, through his mysterious pursuit made up of shovels, excavations and buried memories.
But the apparition of Farfariel, a strange devil with unclear intentions – even capable of stepping into the writing of the book telling his own story! – will change the game, causing Micù to face his limits and fears.
